For all of you who have been part of our efforts to make The Fifth Sacred Thing movie, we wanted to just review what we’ve accomplished in 2012 and what we hope to achieve in 2013.
In the summer of 2011, we ran a very successful Kickstarter campaign that raised $76,000, money which has sustained us throughout 2012. The best part of the campaign was that it demonstrated how much amazing support there is for this project in our extended communities.
Of that money, a big chunk goes back to Kickstarter, Amazon, and must be used to fulfill the gift pledges to donors. The rest went many places—getting our legal and financial structures set up and vetted, creating art, character sketches and illustrations, getting some musical themes written and recorded, getting a preliminary line-item budget done and an investor packet written, illustrated, designed and distributed to likely prospects. We also brought on board Andie Grace to shepherd our web presence and social media—formerly, she did that for Burning Man. We’ve maintained an active website, Facebook page and Twitter account, which continue to build support and ‘buzz’ for the project.
And some of the money allowed Starhawk to devote time to revising the screenplay, writing a treatment and first script for a two-part variation, and a draft of the sequel, working title City of Refuge, in which Bird and Madrone go down to liberate the Southlands.
Starhawk and Jay Rosenberg, our Green Coordinator, also ran a pilot program in Bayview Hunters Point, San Francisco’s most stressed inner-city neighborhood, that we hope will prove a template for programs we can do in connection with the movie production. We built an urban garden together with six young people who come from public housing and who have had involvement with the criminal justice system. They learned permaculture, horticulture, job readiness skills and built confidence and self-esteem, and four out of the six went on to jobs and/or higher education.
As we step into 2013, we are gearing up for a new push. Our financing has not come as quickly as we’d hoped, and we’ve taken time to reflect on the feedback we’ve been receiving that our first budget may be too high, requiring either big-name stars or a studio to finance it. We knew that from the beginning, but decided to at least start at the top!
Currently, we are producing a new short video pitch, and should have it ready early in March. It will be narrated by Olympia Dukakis, who has given us a letter of interest in playing Maya. The video will feature some of our new art and music, and will be of great help in securing our three major goals for the year:
A director and key personnel
Casting for key roles
If we can meet those goals, we’ll be rolling into preproduction in late 2013 and shooting in 2014!
And Starhawk’s personal goal is to finish the sequel!
We’re deeply grateful for the help and encouragement you’ve already given us.
