Earth Activist Training July 2011

Just two weeks into our Kickstarter campaign, and already raised over a third of our goal—thank you, everyone!  We still have a long way to go, but the response has been so heartening!

Right now, I’m in the midst of teaching an Earth Activist Training – a course that combines permaculture design with a grounding in spirit and a focus on organizing.  A couple nights ago we were talking about strategy and using a wonderful article by systems theorist Donella Meadows as a base: “Nine Ways to Intervene in a System.”

The most powerful way to shift a system, she says, is to change its underlying paradigm.  That’s what stories can do.  A powerful story can make us look at the world in a different way—to question the underlying assumptions and frameworks through which we view reality.

“Consciousness is the most stubborn substance in the cosmos, and the most fluid. It can be as rigid as concrete, and it can change in an instant. A song can change it, or a story, or a fragrance wafting by on the wind.”  That’s what Lily says in The Fifth Sacred Thing, when she is trying to help Bird understand that there are other ways to fight besides guns and bombs.

Already as we set out to bring this story alive in a new media, we’re meeting so many people who understand that to create material changes in our world, we need to also create a shift in consciousness and a change in paradigms. We have so many allies! Thank you for being among them!
